Stone
The stones consist of a
metal backing of various sizes and an

Theabrasive contains a binder, which can
be of three types (vitrified, metallic or
resinoid depending on the material to be processed).
Characteristics
The abrasivestones used in honing processes consist of two main components:
Metalsupport
The structural stone base is a metal support, available in various sizes and shapes, designed to ensure a secure and stable attachment inside the tool holder or operating machine. This support acts as an anchoring element for the abrasive strip and guarantees mechanical strength during the machining process.Abrasivelath
The functional heart of the stone is the abrasive lath, i.e. the active material that removes material from the workpiece. The abrasive lath is composed of abrasivegranules held together by a specific binder, which determines its performance characteristics in terms of hardness, porosity , cutting capacity and wear resistance.
Types of binders
The type of bond used in the abrasive strip is selected according to the nature of the material to be processed and the objectives of the process. The main types of binder are:
Vitrifiedbinder (ceramic):
Manufactured by sintering at high temperatures, it offers good heat resistance and dimensional stability. It is suitable for ferrous materials and provides good shape retention.Metalbond:
Composed of sintered metals (such as bronze or other alloys), it guarantees high hardness and durability. Suitable for work on very hard or abrasive materials, such as hardened steel or metal carbides.Resinoidbinder (synthetic resin-based ):
It is the most versatile and is often used for machining non-ferrous materials, light alloys or mild steels. O
